Genius Hour TED Talk
Ted Talk Reflection
I was so nervous about making a Ted Talk. I did not think I had the skills or the tools to create a good Ted Talk. I was procrastinating it for so long because of the pressure. Eventually, I just sat down and began doing it. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. I actually did not mind talking about my project. I did find my voice very annoying, but iMovie was a fun and easy tool to use. I actually learned a lot about movie editing through this assignment, because I had never had to do that before. I think I would apply this to my teaching because it taught me how to be a better teacher. It taught me to persevere, and to really know my learners. I need to know myself as well as my learners. I will definitely be doing a Genius Hour with my students, they could really benefit from an assignment like this. I think an experiment like this could be used in any topic. One could study why students do not enjoy math and try and come up with more ways that they could inspire students. Overall, I am very happy with the outcome of my Ted Talk. Ted Talks have been done on any and every subject, they are a universal learning and teaching tool.

Casey, you did a great job on your Ted Talk! It was very interesting to hear about how much literacy has been lacking in the classroom. It doesn't quite seem to be something that is made to be important anymore. I enjoyed that you shared your week by week steps and the experiment that you did with each group. It's very interesting to see that originally they were not interested, however with some perseverance and encouragement, they came around...great job! I also believe that students will naturally be more interested if there are more choices of books available to them and libraries now days should make sure that those choices are available to keep kids coming in. Awesome job!
ReplyDeleteHi Casey!!
ReplyDeleteYour TED talk was awesome. I love how personal it was and how you were honest about your experiences and your emotions throughout the process. I also enjoyed how you organized your talk based on the different weeks. That way, I was aware of the different stages of your research process and the progress you made! Your topic is a very important and relevant one. Most students are finding their resources and books online and forgetting the value of holding a physical book in your hand. But I agree with one of your concluding statements –whether it’s on an e reader, or a physical book, as long as they’re reading, it is a GOOD thing. I like the colour scheme of your blog. The colours are very complementary and the text is clear and easy to read. One suggestion I have is to be consistent with your formatting. For example, you centre some photos and not others. In your copyright post, both photos are centered, but in your first and last post, some are centred and others aren’t, so I would suggest to be more consistent to increase your blogs visual appeal. GREAT job, you should be proud!
I like your background, the use of little image windows, and the images to highlight what you are talking about. I also like how you broke down the steps you took by weeks. I also like how you highlighted the challenges you had.
ReplyDeleteCassie,
ReplyDeleteIt's awesome that you did your Genius Hour on something that you are very passionate about (I could tell you were super passionate with how happily and enthusiastically you were speaking)! I am also interested in this topic, and I learned something new, that I can use in the future! It's sad that you did not have a good turn out for your reading club at first! Once you develop some more new tools and once they get to know you, the experience will probably be way better! :) One criticism I have is that your video is just a little long, but that's it! :)
Amazing job on your TED talk Casey(Guelph pride), I could really see your passion for literature come across in your presentation. I loved how you set up your TED talk into weekly sessions so that I felt I followed you on your journey. I also loved how you incorporated so much real life experimentation and application into your genius hour because I think that is really important because education is so much about incorporating your experiences. The only small comment I have and I may have missed it is actually stating what your genius hour question was because I know you discussed your topic but it may be really impactful to incorporate your question into the TED Talk itself. All in all, great job Casey I really enjoyed it!
ReplyDeleteThis was very well researched, produced, and presented! :D
ReplyDeleteI'm blown away at the hands-on approach to this project! It's funny how you perceive yourself as not having made much progress (around the seven minute mark), but from my perspective it was amazing to see your understanding of motivation and pedagogical understanding grow through your experiences.
Lol - "conclusion for the sake of this video"!? I think that was a worthy implication of your research you shared there. ;)
Well done Casey! :D
